It is widely presumed that wealthy dynasties have no interest in educational matters. The DeVos family of West Michigan is going towards this perception by funding projects aimed at improving various educational services. The patriarch Richard DeVos instilled this and it has been taken up by the rest of the family. Together with his wife, they established a not for profit foundation. Their eldest son, Dick DeVos has adopted this with gusto through the Dick and Betsy DeVos Family Foundation.
The foundation that he established in 1989 was formed with the improvement of education as its core objective among others. Its biggest award has been to the Education Freedom Fund that provides scholarships to needy students so that they can get high quality education in private learning institutions. The noble establishment has also played a significant role in running several learning institutions. These include Potters House, which is a Christian institution based in Michigan that runs two schools, and West Michigan Aviation Academy, which is a flying school based in Grand Rapids.
Dick’s philanthropy has also extended to education legislation all over the country. In 2007 for instance, he funded a campaign in Florida, which eliminated all forms of bias in access to education. This played a major role in increasing access to good quality learning amongst children in Florida. He has also donated to many other charitable causes, which mainly focus on reforms in the educational sector. These include Kids Hope USA, Thunderbird School of Global Management, Rehoboth Christian School, Choices for Children, and the American Educational Reform Council.
In addition, the Dick and Betsy DeVos Scholarship was started in 2008 to support postgraduate students pursuing their studies at Thunderbird School of Global Management. Beneficiaries are mostly drawn from third world countries. They also fund the Dick and Betsy DeVos Scholars for Free Enterprise and Entrepreneurship, which is available to those wishing to study undergraduate and postgraduate courses in Business Administration at Northwood University.
